Unit 3 Period 7 Table 5

Density and Buoyancy

by:Pedro, Steven, Maddie, and Matt

Description:

In this unit we learned how to calculate the mass, volume, density, and buoyancy of an object, and using this information we experimented through three different labs. These labs were Calculating mass, volume, and density; Sink or float?; and Buoyancy of an Object. Through each filter we used facts and information we learned through the notes to cunduct several experiments including, using equations to calculate the mass, volume, and density of an object. In the sink or float labwe used knowledge of an objects density to predict if it would sink or float, and put these objects and liquids into a gradulated cylinder and watched the result. In this unit we also learned how to meausre an objects buoyancy through finding the mass of the displaced water.

Standards Covered in this unit:

All objects experience a buoyant force when immersed in a fluid. As a basis for understanding this concept:

  1. Students know density is mass per unit volume.
  2. Students know how to calculate the density of substances (regular and irregular solids and liquids) from measurements of mass and volume.
  3. Students know the buoyant force on an object in a fluid is an upward force equal to the weight of the fluid the object has displaced.
  4. Students know how to predict whether an object will float or sink.
